31 straight answers about buying, special orders, FFL transfers, background checks, shipping and Texas rules.
Buying from WTFS 9
Where is West Texas Firearms & Supplies located?
We’re a licensed firearms dealer based in San Angelo, Texas. WTFS is home-based, not a storefront, so call (325) 456-2370 or email [email protected] to set up a time to look at a gun, pick up an order or complete a transfer.
Do you have regular store hours?
No walk-in hours. Because WTFS is run out of San Angelo by Danny Updike, everything is by arrangement. Reach out first and we’ll find a time that works.
Can you order a gun that isn’t in stock?
Yes. That’s a big part of what we do. Tell us the make, model, caliber and any must-have features, and we’ll track it down through our distributors and let you know price and availability before you commit.
What brands can you get?
We can order from the major manufacturers, including Sig Sauer, Glock, Smith & Wesson, Ruger, Springfield Armory, CZ, Henry, Mossberg, Daniel Defense and Aero Precision. If it’s legal to sell and a distributor has it, ask.
Is the inventory on the website up to date?
Stock moves fast, so the website shows the kinds of firearms and gear we deal in rather than a live count. Call or email for what’s on hand right now or to get something ordered.
Do you sell ammo and accessories too?
Yes. Ammunition and accessories like optics, magazines, lights and holsters are part of the “Supplies” in our name. Ask what’s available or have it added to an order.
Do you sell used firearms?
Yes, as they become available. Used pistols, rifles and shotguns come and go quickly, so ask what’s currently on hand.
Do you collect sales tax?
Anyone who purchases within the State of Texas is required to pay sales tax. If you’re tax exempt, proper Texas Sales Tax Exemption documentation is required.
If I order a gun and don’t like it, or I don’t pass the background check, what happens?
You’ll be refunded your money less $50.00 to cover the background check fee and return shipping.
FFL transfers 8
What is an FFL transfer?
When you buy a gun online or from someone out of state, it can’t ship straight to your house. It ships to a licensed dealer (an FFL) who logs it in, has you fill out ATF Form 4473, runs the background check and then hands it over. WTFS can be that dealer for you in San Angelo.
Can I buy a gun online and have it shipped to you?
Yes. Buy from the online retailer, auction site or distributor of your choice, pick WTFS as your receiving FFL, and we’ll handle the transfer here in San Angelo.
How do I get a gun shipped to WTFS?
1) Contact us first so we know it’s coming. 2) Buy the gun and choose West Texas Firearms & Supplies as your FFL. 3) Have the seller request a copy of our license at [email protected] if they don’t already have it on file. 4) Send us your name, the seller and tracking number. 5) When it arrives we’ll call you to set up pickup, paperwork and the background check.
How does the seller get a copy of your FFL?
Have the seller email [email protected] and we’ll send a copy of our license directly to them. Many large online retailers already have dealers on file and will simply ask you to choose one.
How much do you charge for a transfer?
Call or email for the current transfer fee before you order so there are no surprises when you pick up.
Can a private person ship me a gun through you?
Often, yes, but carrier rules differ between handguns and long guns and between licensed and unlicensed shippers. Call before anything ships and we’ll explain how the sender should package and send it.
I bought a gun from a private seller in another state. Can you do the transfer?
Yes. Under federal law, a private sale between residents of different states has to go through a licensed dealer in the buyer’s state. Have the seller (or their local FFL) ship it to WTFS and you’ll complete the transfer here.
How soon can I pick up my gun after it arrives?
Once it’s received and logged, we’ll contact you to set a time. Texas has no state waiting period, so if your background check comes back with a proceed, you can usually take it home the same visit.
Background checks & eligibility 6
Are background checks required?
Yes. All guns sold require a Federal Firearms Form 4473, and a background check will be run.
What ID do I need to bring?
A valid, government-issued photo ID that shows your current address, like a Texas driver license or ID card. If your ID doesn’t show your current address, bring an additional government-issued document that does (vehicle registration, for example).
Does a Texas License to Carry let me skip the background check?
Bring your License to Carry. A valid Texas LTC may be accepted in place of a new NICS check at the time of transfer. You’ll still complete the Form 4473 either way.
How old do I have to be to buy a gun from a dealer?
Federal law sets the minimum at 21 for handguns and 18 for rifles and shotguns when buying from a licensed dealer.
What if my background check comes back “delayed”?
Most checks come back in minutes. A delay just means the FBI needs more time to review. We’ll keep you posted and let you know as soon as there’s an answer.
I live outside Texas. Can I buy a gun from you?
Long guns can generally be sold in person to residents of other states when the sale is legal in both states. Handguns for out-of-state residents have to be shipped to a licensed dealer in your home state. Call and we’ll walk you through it.
Shipping 3
Can you ship to my state?
We can ship to all 50 US states, but we can’t ship to you directly. You’ll need a local FFL dealer in your city to accept the delivery, and there is typically a small charge for that service. To find an FFL near you, search the FFL registry by ZIP code.
Can you ship a gun straight to my house?
No. Firearms have to ship dealer to dealer. We send it to the FFL you choose, and you complete the paperwork and background check there.
Can you help me find a hard-to-get model and ship it to my local dealer?
Yes. We’ll source it, quote you, and once it’s paid for we ship it to the FFL of your choice anywhere in the US.
Texas rules 2
Is there a waiting period to buy a gun in Texas?
No. Texas doesn’t have a state waiting period. Once your 4473 is complete and the background check clears, the transfer can be completed.
Do I need a permit to buy a handgun in Texas?
No. Texas doesn’t require a permit to purchase. You still have to meet federal age requirements, complete the 4473 and pass the background check.
